What Is a Medical Abortion?

An unexpected pregnancy has a way of making everything feel urgent at once. If a medical abortion is one of the paths you are looking into, the best thing you can do for yourself right now is slow down to get accurate information about what it involves, what your body may go through, and what the risks are before you take any next step.

New Life Family Outreach is here to walk alongside you with free, confidential support in a caring, welcoming environment. Make an appointment today or call us at (336) 887-2232.

What a Medical Abortion Involves

A medical abortion uses two drugs taken separately, usually within a day or two of each other, and is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation. The first, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, the hormone that supports and sustains a pregnancy, causing the pregnancy to stop developing. The second, misoprostol, prompts the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy and related tissue, which most women experience as cramping and vaginal bleeding over the course of several hours.

The intensity of this process varies from person to person. Some women experience symptoms similar to a heavy menstrual period, while others report more significant pain, heavy bleeding, nausea, or fatigue. Individual experiences can vary based on factors such as gestational age and personal health.

Reported Side Effects

In addition to cramping and bleeding, women have reported a range of other side effects, including:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

The severity and combination of these symptoms can vary significantly from one person to another.

Potential Risks to Consider

As with any medical procedure, some risks should be carefully considered. These may include:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Incomplete abortion requiring additional treatment
  • Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs are not effective

Speaking with a qualified healthcare provider before proceeding is strongly encouraged.

How New Life Family Outreach Can Help

New Life Family Outreach offers confidential pregnancy testing at no cost. After a positive pregnancy test, getting an ultrasound is an important next step. An ultrasound can confirm whether the pregnancy is viable, how far along you are, and whether the pregnancy is located within the uterus, all of which are details that shape every option available to you.

New Life Family Outreach can help you access a free ultrasound, so you have the full picture before making any decision.

Our team is also here to talk through all three of your options: parenting, adoption, and abortion, offering support in a judgment-free space and at a pace that feels right for you.

If you have already had an abortion and are carrying difficult emotions because of it, New Life Family Outreach offers the Grace Program, a 10-week small group experience designed to help you find healing, peace, and freedom from pain. One-on-one sessions are also available if you prefer a more private setting.

Reach out today to schedule your free, confidential appointment.
